Initially, Pi experiences powerful negative emotions: despair, anger, and hatred for the Frenchman who attempted to kill him. Instead of dwelling on the past, Pi tends to focus on events that will reaffirm his faith, such as waiting for an arrival of a school of fish or a storm. Additionally, Pi reveals that he "prays for the [Frenchman's] soul daily," emphasizing that he has maintained his religious aspects of caring for and hoping for the wellbeing of others, be they malevolent or beneficial to society (117). Pi admitted to eating parts of the Frenchman's flesh and organs when hungry and even elaborates that the body tasted scrumptious. However, Pi is guided by the nurturing of God aids Pi in not losing his sanity while at sea. Pi has been forced to resort to cannibalism to survive, as well as killing nearby fish, which goes against his religious views of not killing or harming others.
