The main cause of the revolt of 1857 was the Enfield rifle, wherein the cartridge had to be bitten off before loading into the gun. It was rumored that the cartridge was either greased with pig fat or cow fat. Which was against the Hindu and Muslim religious beliefs and sentiments. This enraged the Indian sepoys against the Britishers. The British interference with the religious and cultural affairs of Indians was the main factor that caused the revolt of 1857. Thus this rumour played a crucial role in the uprising of the sepoys, leading to Indias First War of Independence against the British.
