It was rumored that the cartridge was either greased with pig fat or cow fat. Which was against the Hindu and Muslim religious beliefs and sentiments. This enraged the Indian sepoys against the Britishers. The British interference with the religious and cultural affairs of Indians was the main factor that caused the revolt of 1857.
