Students love whip around- after book selection (and pending on their grade level). This brings the class back together, helps to focus them again after the chaos of book selection and reinforces library learning as well as public speaking skills.

When dealing with classroom management I have had to change my approach. When I worked with little kids we did a fancy clap to get their attention. With the older kids, I figured that wasn't appropriate. So I either count backwards from 3 to get their attention or wait until they notice I was waiting for them to stop talking. I have found that both work well.
