Though it was opposed by many whites and African-Americans, the economic dependence caused the majority of politicians to lean towards maintaining it. Many vocal abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison, Fredrick Douglass, and Sarah Grimke, preached that the idea of liberty and equality for all, was to end slavery. Perhaps the movement's greatest success, came with the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman, the conductor of the metaphorical "railroad" helped free 300 slaves even with a $40,000 bounty on her head.
