         <description><![CDATA[<div>As more people moved along railways and waterways, tragic disaster increased. <br>The <em>SS Central America </em>was a 270-foot side-wheel steamer that carried passengers and cargo. It stormed right into a hurricane and the ship sank off the coast of the Carolina's and hundreds of people drowned.<br>The Great Train Wreck of 1856 occurred on July 17, 1856 when two trains slammed head-on into each other. An estimated 60 people died and more than 100 were injured.<br><br></div>]]></description>

On May 24, 1844, he testes out his system in front of a crowd. He sent a message to an operator in Baltimore and they sent back the same message moments later. </div>]]></description>
