The broken promise and dominant ideology being addressed in both texts is the idea of "all men being equal." Throughout the text, Chavez makes points to remind the President of the Tree Fruit Company (oppressor) that the workers are human as well. The fact that Chavez feels the need to remind those in power that they, too, are human is an example that they are not being treated as such. It also discusses the ideas of systemic racism and how the agricultural business ties the workers down and makes it harder for them to move up and work for a better life that was sought after in America. Chavez pulls logical evidence through the mistreatment he faced himself.
