Coming into this class, I was very timid. Although as the semester went on, I expressed more creativity through my artwork (Instead of just drawing the requirements). With the Continous line and Gesture drawings, for example, the figures are basic and lack creativity. But, for drawings such as the shadow play project, I began to experiment more. For instance, I tried to blend different colors together and scratch through with designs. Overall, I feel my art shows growth because, in contrast to the beginning of the semester, I feel more confident and creative with my designs. Although, the most significant way that I have grown as an artist has probably been absorbing all of the different techniques. Before taking this class, I did not know how to properly shade, or draw realistic objects. Projects such as observation/ arrangement, and portrait practice have introduced me to different ways of thinking. For instance, now instead of looking at a whole flower, I see different lines and shapes. Also, this has been an artistic struggle that I have learned from over the semester. Seeing objects as lines and shapes helps minimize the unnecessary distractions and distortions that can "ruin" a drawing or painting. Another thing that I have been struggling to deal with is my perfectionism of my work. The smallest details can potentially cause me to start a whole piece over, no matter how minimal the mistake is. Learning how to combat this has been helpful with my time management as well. Instead of having to constantly start over, I begin to problem solve and find ways to incorporate the mistake into my artwork. Reflecting back on all of my artwork through the semester has made me think of what direction I want my work to go from this point forward. Mostly, I would like to create a personal sense of design. Next semester, I am going to try to work with similar color concepts and incorporate designs into each piece. I want my artwork to be visually pleasing and give a sense of melancholy, fantasy, and utopia. For the skin, hair, and background I chose to work with active colors such as blue and green to give the effect of it receding. In contrast, I used colors such as pink, purple and magenta to make the eyebrows, lips, and shirt stand out. In the final result, I wished that the colors weren't so contrasting and if I were to do this again I would pick lighter shades for everything so the darks would stand out more.
