He first married Isabella, Countess of Gloucester (1173-1217) in 1189 and remained married for 10 years. In 1200 he married Isabella, Countess of Angoulême (1186-1246).

 On 19 October 1216, he died during his military campaign in the east of England of a dysentery.
It was a year later that the supporters of his son Henry III had victory against Louis and the barons.
