Cortes was cruel to the Natives who worked in his coal mines. The Natives offered a slave as a peace tready. It is believed that the slave helped Hernando Cortes conquer Mexico. When some of the Spaniards wished to return to Cuba, Hernando burned his 10 ships. Cortes was friendly to the Natives who were enemies of Montezuma. Cortes tricked the Aztec into giving him gold by saying that he had a disease that could only be cured by gold. Some of the frightened Natives tried to please Hernando by offering human sacrafices
