Impacting Students through Course Design and Delivery (LN:6343) by Alex Penn

In Discussion Module 1, you identified a section of the ROC that you plan to develop further in your online course. Expand your plan by responding to these questions:
How would meeting the criteria of your identified section impact the student learning experience in your course?
How can the annotations and resources in your identified section of the ROC guide you in strengthening the quality of your course? What additional resources might you need to have in order to further develop in this area?

Question 1: How would meeting the criteria of your identified section impact the student learning experience in your course?

My identified area of improvement is to "Start Right". I believe that setting students off on the right foot at the very beginning of the course is essential to helping them build a necessary foundation for success within the course, and would ensure students felt comfortable with the expectations and design of the course from the beginning.

Question 2: For each section of the ROC, there are annotations and resources to guide faculty in aligning their course with each criterion. How can the annotations and resources in your identified section of the ROC guide you in strengthening the quality of your course?

The annotations and resources contain definitions and examples as they related to the two criteria of design and delivery. When using the ROC the annotations and resources provide clarity for what these different sections look like in an online course, which is especially helpful for a newer professor like myself who is learning the ropes.

Question 3: What additional resources might you need to have in order to further develop in this area?

I would want to reach out to my fellow SLS instructors to see how they design the first module of their courses to ensure students "start right". I would also want to ask my students to rate the effectiveness of my introductory module/activities to see if they feel that their needs are adequately met from the start.

I spoke with speech faculty and course development specialist and they all agree that flipgrid is a good technological tool to use for the assignment. My main issue is making sure that the in class link for the students to use is linked correctly and that I don't violate any privacy policies of the college.

· This is an awesome resource! I took Screencasting, however, I haven’t felt confident with the skills that I learned. This resource will help me to, like a student, gain confidence in mastering creation of video content. I plan to use Kaltura for my recordings. I record videos on course content quite often using Zoom for another institution, and Kaltura seems to be similar. I also love the Example Welcome Video Script that I can format for my particular course and welcome message.

Annotations and resources can serve as a guide to evaluate my current online course design. I believe building and refining my online courses is a recursive process. I don’t just get it right the first time. I constantly modifying my online course as I learn about how to improve it. For example, the annotations under the Accessibility/Usage criterion serve as a checklist. For standard 2.6: Ensuring the correct captioning of videos, as well as accurate transcriptions of all audio files, is a standard I need to be constantly aware of. I have incorporated audio and video downloads of all my lectures in each module; however, it was a surprise to me to find that the system I initially used for the audio files did not allow for accurate transcription.
