Hillary Rodham Clinton was First Lady of the country from 1993 to 2001. During that time, her and her husband were the focus of a relative amount of political scandals--not really unusual for an administration, but stories such as the Vince Foster suicide (theorized to be a covered-up murder, though his sister discredits this), "Travelgate," (firing White House staff members for favors, although a DOJ report in 2000 by Robert Ray exonerated both Clintons), and the Whitewater Scandal, which is honestly mostly just a bunch of people being bad at real estate. Oh, and Monica Lewinsky. That....went very poorly.

Bill Clinton is a creep who sexually coerced a young intern while being the most powerful man on the planet. That is not up for debate. The problem is the media backlash--Dennis Hastert, a convicted serial child rapist and speaker of the House at the time, was essentially an inquisitor who used Bill Clinton being a creep to paint Bill--and the Democratic Party, by association--as an immoral, godless party of adulterers. Secretary Clinton continued to stay married to Bill Clinton, prompting scorn from both the public and the media.

I feel like at this point the phrase alone activates some killswitch in my brain. But I digress. Ultimately, the email server, which was something she maintained on advice from departing Secretary Colin Powell, and for what it is worth, this was back in 2008, and the pace of technology in the White House had not quite caught up to understanding what keeping things on an email record implied versus a phone. Nevertheless, this became a lynchpin of coverage regarding Hillary Clinton for literally the entire campaign. For comparison, the other candidate was caught on tape bragging about sexual assault, and received three weeks of coverage about it in response.
Also, for what it is worth, here are six current White House officials using private email servers.

Remember how this race became about "optics" rather than policy because to debate the two candidates on policy would be like bringing Toby Keith to a Judith Butler fight? Yeah. I remember. I am angry. I openly admit I am furious, because I firmly believe we were cheated of fair coverage of the issues and facts about the candidates in favor of covering nonsense until it was beaten into the ground. I believe the media failed the country by pretending this was a normal political race between equally capable opponents rather than a woman who was frankly overqualified to be President and an incompetent buffoon with doll hands. I am so angry it makes my head light and my eyes ache. Even now I am angry because the media has not owned up to their failure in how this election was covered. How can I trust them to do better in 2020 and beyond when they refuse to acknowledge their mistakes in 2016?

I literally cannot write down everything I am feeling about how Hillary Rodham Clinton was covered by the media in this presentation. There is too much to take in and too colossal of a failure on the part of the media and the voting public to pay attention to the major, prescient threat that her opponent presented. As a young American voter with a longstanding connection to politics and a vested interest in the issues of this election, seeing it all fall to optics and the media's refusal to put their grudge aside about HRC and let that personal bias turn the tide of coverage the way it went is....infuriating. This was a failure. This was a betrayal. And anyone who is still angry about how she was treated has every right to be heard. This is a larger societal problem of misogyny at work, and keeping that in mind regarding her campaign and its media coverage is paramount.
