"I was encompassed by a cloud which no beneficial influence could penetrate. The wounded deer dragging its fainting limbs to some untrodden brake, there to gaze upon the arrow which had pierced it, and to die, was but a type of me." (Shelley, 89)

One reason the tone changes several times in the book because the emotions of the narrator change. The mood of the story is based off the emotions of the characters, and people’s feelings can change a lot in a small amount of time, if a lot of things are happening. In these few chapters of Frankenstein, Victor is very troubled and under a lot of stress, so many negative emotions show. Additionally, during his uneventful travels through the wilderness, he manages to get lost in thought and find temporary peace of mind. Whenever he encounters the creature, though, hate and fear build up. All of Victor’s feelings are shown in the tone of the book. This is important since it gives more life to the story and to the character Victor, because conveying the mood can immerse the reader. It helps them feel and understand the characters’ emotions and the mood from other messages and settings in the book.
