I personally can not describe or remember a time when I saw a Catch 22 in my life but I can provide an example. Perhaps someone is very poor and they can not land a job anywhere.

Omelas, Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor

“Omelas” explores this concept because if you save the child and make him/her happy, the town will then suffer. However, if you keep the town happy, the child will then suffer. In “Lifeboat Ethics,” it has somewhat of a catch-22 because it describes that helping poor or less fortunate people than ourselves can actually cause more damage in the long run, but at the same time, if people don’t help the poor then they will still be suffering.

I have had the issue before of not being able to adequately balance homework, and having to choose between spending a fair amount of time on one assignment and then not performing too well or at all on another assignment, or spending small amounts of time on all of them but then not having enough time to complete them well.

In this, he explains how helping the world’s poorer nations and classes would be a wonderful thing to do, which most everyone can agree that it is, but the catch would be that to do so, you would have to donate most of one’s material possessions and donate any excess currency that they have.

Normally authors who use a catch-22 do so in a harsh manner, leading the reader to believe something good and wonderful is happening, that there isn’t anything wrong, until the catch actually appears, like it does so in “Omelas”.

The biggest catch-22 that I personally see in life is for jobs. Most jobs require you to have experience to actually be hired; But the problem is, you need a job to gain experience, but aren’t hired due to lack of experience.

It is used in Lifeboat Ethics, Omelas and the lottery
2. They write about stories that convey a situation where a character cannot escape a situation and will have to face the consequences of the situation whether they enjoy the task at hand or not.
3. I see the phrase “Catch-22” applied to my life in places such as at HHS, or pretty much anywhere in the world.

1. Omelas, The Lottery
2. In Omelas, that Catch 22 they can either be “happy” in the town, knowing that there is a child suffering to make their lives better, or they can leave the utopia and fend for themselves, possibly making their own suffering. There is no good path to go down where everyone is happy.

In The Lottery, they can either watch one of their neighbors- possibly a child like Little Dave- be stoned to death and partake in said stoning, or try to defend their friends and possibly be stoned or worse themselves.

3. I see a Catch 22 when I think about deciding what college to go to. I can either do my best to get tuition money for ISU, leave my family, take a huge risk, and possibly hate it. OR I can go to MCC for two years and continue to live with my family struggles and sheltered life. Either way I’m not sure I’ll be totally happy/satisfied.

The Lottery is another example of catch-22 because people know that stoning somebody is not good and that they should stop but nobody speaks up until it affects them.

The authors explore this concept by showing how we know that there is bad in the world yet most people do nothing to stop it because it does not affect them and their lives. People think that if does not have anything to do with them then it is not there problem and they shouldn’t have to fix it.

I do see how this is apart of my life and the community around me. For example in The Lottery they all hold this event where they pick a name of a person to stone to death and no one speaks up about how wrong it is or maybe even acknowledge what they are doing is wrong because it is a “tradition” in their community. WIth Omelas they have this boy hid in a cellar knowing he is suffering just to make everyone else happy and no one acknowledges what they are doing is wrong because it is what they are used to.

I see this at HHS when people make fun of one another because they don't necessarily dress or act like everyone else and this occurs a lot but yet no one thinks twice about what we are doing or what effect it has on that person because it is something that is always done and what will probably continue to be done because in our eyes it is a “tradition” or what is considered normal.

Not exactly what was asked for in Padlet, but wanted to draw your attention to this definition:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22_(logic)#cite_note-1
A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules.[1][2] The term was coined by Joseph Heller, who used it in his 1961 novel Catch-22.

An example would be:
"How am I supposed to gain experience [to be hired for a job] if I'm constantly turned down for not having any?"[3]

Catch-22s often result from rules, regulations, or procedures that an individual is subject to but has no control over because to fight the rule is to accept it. Another example is a situation in which someone is in need of something that can only be had by not being in need of it. (A bank will never issue someone a loan if they need the money.) One connotation of the term is that the creators of the "catch-22" situation have created arbitrary rules in order to justify and conceal their own abuse of power.

Ms. C.

Either way he would die no matter which you picked. In Lifeboat Ethics Garrett Hardin talked about the World Food Bank where people can donate food into the bank and people can take food out if they need it, countries donating and countries taking. In the short run it would help the poorer countries with their food issue, but in the long run they will increase in population even more and the demand for food will go up so the rest of the countries that are donating won’t be able to keep up and soon enough they’re back to square one before the bank.

Catch-22 in my Life.

Right now in my life at HHS when I go for help on my work I end up still not knowing what I’m doing and then I still fail the quizzes and tests, either way, if I try to get help or not I fail.

1. In Omelas when the kid is locked in the room he can't get out and no one will let him out.

2. They explore this concept by having a group or people or one person be in a ¨catch-22¨ situation with no way out.

3. In my life this concept goes with school because there is no escape because if I drop out then my future will highly be impacted.
