1. Muslims have to fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. It is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Fasting involves not consuming any food or water from sunrise to sunset. Any Muslim who is 14 Islamic years old or more has to fast. There are many reasons why Muslims are ordered to fast. For example, it is to develop compassion for the poor by experiencing how it is like to be them. Another reason why fasting is obligatory is to conserve food and water. By not eating, we don't waste any food or water during the day. Lastly, and in my opinion, the most important aspect of fasting is developing our willpower. During fasting, you have to stay away from more than just food and water. You have to stay away from other forbidden acts such as lying, backbiting, gossiping, or vain talk. When we stay away from these things, it develops our character and makes us better individuals.

2. Ramadan - The ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, in which the Qur'an was first revealed and in which Muslims are ordered to fast. Furthermore, it is one of the three holy Islamic months.

I'tikaf - Staying inside a Masjid and not leaving for an extended period of time, praying, reading qur'an and other forms of worship. People sometimes stay inside a Masjid for days at end, not eating, drinking or talking. They just engross themselves in worshipping Allah.

Sawm: Sawm is often defined as fasting during the month of Ramadan, but it actually means "to abstain from doing something." This means that we have to abstain from food and water, as well as other forbidden acts during Sawm.

Taraweeh : Taraweeh are optional but recommended prayers to be prayed at night during Ramadan. They are to be prayed after Isha' prayers and have to be prayed in pairs of 2 rakats. You can pray 8, 12 or 20 rakats of Taraweeh. It is not obligatory but recommended.

Suhoor: Suhoor refers to the morning meal consumed by muslims before fasting in the month of ramadan.

Iftar: The meal consumed after fasting during the month of Ramadan to break the fast.

Every accountable Muslim is obligated to fast the month of Ramadan. A young child is not obligated to fast. Fasting is not obligatory on the insane person. Fasting is not obligatory on a person whose body cannot tolerate fasting, either due to old age or severe illness. The one who is travelling a walking distance of two or more days (about 80 miles or 130 kilometres) is permitted to break their fast, provided his reason for traveling is not sinful. However, one must make up the missed days. Fasting is not obligatory on the menstruating woman, or the woman who has postpartum bleeding. The pregnant woman is permitted to break her fast if she fears harm may come to her or her baby from fasting. This includes the breastfeeding woman as well.
