Both Coraline and Alice in Wonderland have female antagonists that are significantly older than the protagonists who are both young girls navigating fantasy worlds. Physically, both the Other Mother and the Queen of Hearts from the Disney animated film have short black hair and wear mostly red and black clothing. Their similarities go deeper than physical appearances, though. Emotionally, they both have short tempers and tend to scream a lot when they are angry. In Alice in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts gets upset and starts screaming and demanding that Alice be detained and beheaded after receiving a bit of impoliteness from Alice. In Coraline, the Other Mother turns into a spider-like monster and locks Coraline up in a small, dark room after Coraline says that she wishes to return to her reality world. Both the Queen of Hearts and the Other Mother become irritated easily and turn to extreme forms of punishment when their orders are not obeyed. The Other Mother rules the alternate world that she has created to trap Coraline with the Other Father as her lackey. Similarly, the Queen of Hearts is the ruler of Alice's fantasy land with her husband, the King of Hearts, as her loyal attendant.

Differences:
Both the Other Mother and the Queen of Hearts rule and demand obedience in their respective fantasy worlds. Their motives for demanding obedience, however, are very different. In Coraline, the Other Mother is a shape-shifting demon who lures children in by creating fantasy dream worlds that erase any problems that the children may experience in their reality worlds. Her ultimate goal is to steal these children's souls through sewing buttons into their eyes, and she has accomplished this goal three times as seen by the three children whose eyes and souls have been taken. The Queen of Hearts, however, did not have any evil objective or intentions when she first met Alice. She simply has a short temper and leans to extreme punishments like beheading for anyone who crosses her path. Both Coraline and Alice are led to the tunnels in their story because of their feeling of boredom. With Coraline, she just recently moved into a new town and as she tries to find ways to relieve her boredom, she stumbles upon the hidden door. While with Alice, she is also bored from reading her book and follows the rabbit to the tunnel because of her attempt to escape her boredom and reality.  In addition, both Alice and Coraline were led to the tunnel from something in the other world. For example, Coraline found the doll peaking out of the tunnel which was how she found the door. Alice had followed the white rabbit which led her to fall down the rabbit hole. The tunnels are a type of connection from the real world and the supernatural world. In both fairy tales, the tunnels led to a more interesting and appealing world, prompting both of the main characters to stay and enjoy themselves. 

Differences:
Coraline goes through the tunnel multiple times to cross over to the other world. However, Alice goes through the rabbit hole only once and only is able to "escape" from the supernatural world by waking up from her dream. A similarity between both the movie Coraline and Alice in Wonderland was that both worlds were both created out of boredom, their own imagination, and their own will to leave their current reality. In their alternate world, they created a reality where they could be happy all the time although that didn't last long. They both created worlds to escape their problems. For example, Alice created her world to escape her school and studies. For Coraline, she wanted to escape her parents neglecting her. By the end of the movie, both of their goals were to get home.

Differences:
A difference between Coraline and Alice was that Coraline had her guard up and was skeptical about the new world. Alice was more lenient towards things because she thought that was the only way she could get home. Another difference would be that Coraline's world was a place she was familiar with, whereas Alice's was a different place that she's never been to before. Coraline's world was also eerier compared to Alice's colorful nature-filled world.

In Coraline and Alice in Wonderland the female main characters encounter several animals along their journey that act as a mentor and guide them throughout the movie. In both movies, there's a cat figure that assists them in their problems. In Alice in Wonderland, one of the animals she meets after falling into the rabbit hole is the Cheshire cat who advises Alice about which path to take on her journey and helps her at her lowest. Similarly in Coraline, she encounters a stray cat who later on helps Coraline by giving her clues about the true nature of the Other Mother and the world they're in and has saved her several times from the rats. Another similarity from the movie is that the girls end up traveling to the "new world" by being led there by an animal(s). In Alice in Wonderland, Alice follows the white rabbit down the rabbit hole while in Coraline she follows several mice through the tunnel to the other world. 

Differences:
Some differences include that although the Cheshire Cat was mostly helpful to Alice in helping her find the right path for the journey, he doesn't do much else to help Alice (especially during the trial) and appears at random times. In Coraline, the cat helps her throughout her time in the alternate world and tells her about the world created by the Other Mother and her devious tactics, and even stays as her companion in the real world after defeating the Other Mother.

The part of her trying to get her parents' attention is understandable as she felt neglected by them working all the time. All she wanted was to spend time with them like how they were able to before moving. I relate to Coraline as when I was younger I would always annoy my parents and try to play with them, not understanding why they couldn’t. Now that I’m older, I’ve realized that they were just working hard for us so they could make family time for me and my brother. It’s easy to wish for our parents to be “better”, especially if you see them acting differently than how they usually are. That’s why I could also understand how when Coraline’s idealized version of her mom and dad came to life, she would want to go back and forth from that world, even with the hints given to her about how all her wishes becoming real seemed too good to be true. Now that I'm more mature, I've realized that although my parents have their own flaws, it doesn't change how much I love them and I know how much they do for me and I wouldn't exchange them for anything.

Near the beginning of the movie, Coraline was seen bothering her parents due to her boredom and because she wanted their attention. I connect with that because most of the time I also annoy my parents whenever I'm bored and want attention. Her way of getting through her reality and problems can be similar to how I cope with my problems in life, by distracting myself with other activities that I enjoy such as listening to music or watching movies. However, near the end of the movie, Coraline is able to save her parents and realize the importance and love from her real parents. She tries to talk to and spend time with her parents but they are too busy working to spend time with her. Specifically, her mom tells Coraline to stop bothering her and even bribes Coraline to do so by unlocking the door for her. Coraline's relationship with her mom is very cold and it isn't until the end of the movie when Coraline is reunited with her parents that their relationship seems to be more sincere. Like Coraline, I was not very close to my mom when I was a child because she worked long shifts.
