National museum of cinema is one of the most important museum in Turin. It is located in Mole Antoneliana, simbol of Turin.

Museum of cinema was built with Maria Adriana Prolo dreams in 1941. She decided to open a museum about the cinema’s history after have shooting the first Italian mute colossal.
I 1956 Prolo became manageress to life of the cinema museum. It opened in 1956 in Palazzo Chiablese, a palace near Piazza Castello and Piazzetta san Giovanni. The museum opened to the public on 27th February 1958. Between 1960 to 1970 it hosted important exhbitions, like Exhibition of Stereoscopy and FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives).

Unfortunately, in 1983, after a bad fire in Cinema Statuto, Cinema Museum closed for security reasons and some of its opera moved to Cinema Massimo and to Rai office. Miss Prolo died in 1991 and the Cinema Museum became municipality of Turin.

In 1995, for the centenary of the birth of cinema, it was decided to move the seat into the Mole Antonelliana. In 2000 was confirmed the new headquarters under Mole Antonelliana.
On the occasion of the XX Turin Winter Olympic Games 2006, the set up renewed with new rooms and rooms dedicated to western, musical, science fiction…now The National Cinema Museum has 800.000 annual visitors.

The museum was designed by the Swiss François Confino. The museum grows spirally on more levels.
First level is “Archeology of Cinema” where it is possible to visit eight thematic area where there are so many different stories that gave rise a world reproduced through Chinese shadows, optical boxes, magic lanterns and subsequent devices to animate images.

The second level is Temple Hall, dedicated to biggest film genre; horror, science fiction, mirrors, western, comedy, crime, 3D film and much more.
From The Temple Hall you can access to the Ramp that like a piece of film.

Cinema Machine illustrates the different components and phases of the film industry, production studies, directing, screenplay, actors, stage costumes, set design. The itinery is studded with footage of famous film clips.
The last room is Poster Gallery where big posters show the cinema history with the most important films and move directors.
