This at-home fraction game "Flip & Match" teaches third graders to recognize equivalent fractions and compare fraction sizes. It targets NJSLS3.NF.3 (Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size). This game consists of short rounds in which students play with number fraction cards. The game focuses on why two fractions are equivalent or not and family-friendly instructions to go with it.

This game is designed for two or more players which focuses on the consistent collaboration between families or students. Students will not only be excited to play a game with their families, but families will also be able to get direct insight on what students are learning in class. Students and families are also respectfully sharing their explanations and listening to different strategies promoting learning from others.

As an educator, it is my sole responsibility to ensure that this game is up to state standards and promotes the growth of my students. I plan to collaborate with my grade level colleagues on the "Flip & Match" game to exchange feedback and differentiate it for diverse learners. My colleagues can help me adapt the game to bring it in the classroom as well for targeted small groups as well as math centers. I also plan to work locally with math specialists and real world phenomena to connect students outside lives to this game. Working together ensures that students experience similar approaches that they are familiar with as they progress to higher grade levels.

If the player is correct, they will keep those two cards.

If the cards do not show equivalent fractions, the player will have to decide which fraction is bigger, and justify their reasoning.

Fractions are integrated directly into the "Flip & Match" game. Each card shows a fraction symbol or a fraction model using visuals or drawings. Students must match the cards that represent equivalent fractions and practice comparing the values of two fractions when they are not equal. Each turn requires students to actively apply mathematical reasoning by explaining their answers rather than just memorizing the facts.
