Ghana is in West Africa. The land in Ghana is good for agriculture and contains a decent amount of forestry. The land also has a lot of natural resources which is why it has never been a poor country. The people in Ghana take advantage of the natural resources such as gold and good soil in order to make money, The terrain is a lot of low plains and plateaus which is good for farming, one disadvantage of the land is the lake of natural rivers and lakes. The famous rivers and lakes such as Lake Volta and River Bia are man-made.

Ghana has a few major ethnic groups, the first one is the Akan ethnic group, they make up half of Ghana. They include many tribes such as the Ashanti and their empire. The Akans migrated to Ghana in the 11th century and played a major role gold mining up until the 19th century. They traded with Europeans and played a role in slavery. The Europeans would trade slaves and guns to the Akans in exchange for gold which ended in a lot of bloodshed because of the hunger for slaves and indentured servants.
The next major group of Ghana is the Ewe people. The Ewes were both victims of slave raiding and trade, and were also slave sellers to Europeans. The Ewe people often were at war with each other. They would often turn on each other and sell one another as slaves. This became part of their economy, but, after slavery was abolished, the economic activity of the Ewe people became palm oil and copra exports.
The last group that will be discussed are the Dagomba people. They were northern invaders that rose to power. They were very religious and during there rise to fame did whatever it took to get to the top. They helped push religion which is a huge part of Ghana today.

An example is Lake Volta. A lot of Ghana’s vegetation is being destroyed, however, they still have trees like giant silk cotton, African mahogany, and cedar are still in the forest zone in the south.

Ghana was previously called the Gold oast. In 1482, Portuguese settlers arrive and begin trading in gold, ivory and timber with the Akans in exchange for other goods. Because of this they become very influential. By the 1500's, Ghana participates in the slave trade and play such a major role in it that it overtakes gold as the main export in the region. This shows Ghana's hand in the slave trade. By the 1600's, more Europeans arrive and the slave trade becomes more organised and professional. In 1642, the Portuguese leave and give up the territory to the Dutch and soon the British take over. In 1957, Ghana becomes an independent colony and starts it's independent reign.
