The society of Jesus was formed in 1540 in order to expand the catholic religion. Joining them required years of experience and discipline. They later built schools that taught catholic beliefs.

Roman Inquisition

The thirty year was was a conflict between Catholics and protestants which originated in the bohemian. Protestants there loved their generous level of religious toleration. The freedom of majesty ( the freedom to practice their religion) was taken by Ferdinand the 2nd.

Huguenots Protestantism was made illegal in 1534 CE causing conflict in the years of 1562 and 1598 resulting into a massacre.

In 1598 CE they were granted freedom of worship, this makes for one of the first decrees for religious tolerance in France. But later revoked in 1685

Martin Luther

A German monk who believed the practices in church was unfair and the wealthy were aloud to do whatever they wanted. His goal was to reform the church rather then break away. He was later told to take back his ideas but refused. He was forced into hiding where he translated the bible to German.

Martin Luther posted this on the church was of October 31st. That we should gain salvation from faith alone, the bible was the ultimate authority, and that all humans are equal to god. Those were his beliefs that were considered very controversial.

Martin Luther stood up for what he believed would positively effect the church and broke barriers that may have still been in church today. A new branch called Lutheranism was based from his actions.

John Calvin

He was a proud supporter of the Catholic church but when wanting a divorce he was denied. Then created the Act of Supremacy making him head of the church instead of the pope. This then seized and divided the land and wealth of the Catholic England church.
