The Battle of Midway started 6 months after the attack at Pearl Harbor.

Midway was an Island northwest of Hawaii. 

The Japanese codes were broken to reveal the planned attack on Midway. 

Admiral Chester Nimitz was the leader that was sent to defeat Midway. 

June 3, 1942- US scouts found Japanese fleets. 

Nimitz sent American torpedo planes and dive bombers, the Japanese couldn't reat the bombers, all aircrats remained on the decks and so the Japanese lost 4 aircrafts carriers and 250 planes. 

The Battle of Midway was considered the turning point in WW2 in the Pacific becuase the Allies were "Island hopping" to get closer to Japan.

Feb 1945- Big Three (FDR, Churchill, & Stalin) met in USSR to discuss Germany's fate when they lost. 

The Yalta Conference was the second wartime meeting. 

During the conference, the three leaders agreed to demand Germany’s unconditional surrender and began plans for a post-war world. Stalin also agreed to permit free elections in Eastern Europe and to enter the Asian war against Japan, for which he was promised the return of lands lost to Japan in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.

Stalin- harsh approach, separate Germany into zones occupied by Allied Troops. 

Churchill- disagreed

FDR- acted as a mediator because he wanted the Soviet army to join in the Pacific, and he wanted Stalin's support of new world peace-keeping organization called the United Nations.

The Nuremberg trials were a series of 13 trials carried out in Nuremberg, Germany, between 1945 and 1949.

Nazi leader Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) committed suicide and was never brought to trial.

The defendants, who included Nazi Party officials and high-ranking military officers along with German industrialists, lawyers and doctors, were indicted on such charges as crimes against peace and crimes against humanity.

The Discovery of death camps led to 24 Nazi leaders on trial for:   Crimes against humanity(murder, extermination, deportation, or enslavement of citizens); Crimes against peace(planning/waging an aggressive war); War crimes(acts against the customs of warfare) 

Prosecutions were led by: US Chief Justice Robert Jackson

12 of 24 sentenced to death (2 committed suicide before execution), most remaining sentenced to prison time. 

6 million European Jews and an estimated 4 to 6 million Non-Jews were executed
