Deviance

Deviance is behaviour which goes against society's accepted norms and values, it is about the questions of morality, questioning what is right and what is wrong also questioning what is good or evil. Do you think I am right or wrong, good or evil?

Deviance greatly affects the sporting word as it changes the way we view sports creating positive views encouraging more athletes to get involved but on the flip side it reduces the number of athletes because its what we see as being right and wrong and each person will have their own view on topics and this is what makes us humans so unique because each person will have their own reasoning for why they are right or why they are wrong, thus forever teaching each other.

The rise of deviance

Deviance has risen within sport because people are doing whatever they can to win. This means that people are pushing the rules and doing whatever it means to win. Within sports such as football people have been diving, sounding the ref to influence his decision and getting red cards on purpose to make sure they win the game. By doing this your morals go against you and if you dive to get a penalty and win the game from it, your morals will tell you its wrong but you have won the game from it so you are no going to get bothered from it questioning your very own morals changing the way you think and act. This is called gamesmanship pushing the rules to the point of cheating, throwing away the way you think, throwing away that sportsman ship that you once had, all in order to win and retain or even gain a high status, what makes this worse is the fact that you don't care and even your very own team doesn't care encouraging deviance further.

BALCO Scandal - Case Study

The BALCO scandal also known as the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative and they were behind the biggest drug scandal in athletics history, involving sprinters and baseball stars ranging from Dwain Chambers to Barry Bonds. The laboratory was based in San Francisco making nutritional supplements, along side this they were accused of supplying performance enhancing drugs to professional athletes from 1988 to 2002, the laboratory was shut down due to the US federal government investigating the laboratory.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/drugsinsport/8396065/What-is-the-Balco-scandal.html

After 2002, the US anti-doping agency received a syringe containing traces of a banned substance from Trevor Graham the sprint coach to Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. 550 athletes were tested and 20 were found taking the substance THG, Tetrahydrogestrinone which is a type of steroid. Some of the most known athletes that had been taking it are:

Dwain Chambers sprinter, who held the title for second fastest time set by a British sprinter ever, Chambers received a two year ban from the sport in 2003 this was due to him taking performance enhancing drug, Chambers was able to get collect these drugs due to his nutritionist Conte and his coach Remi Korchemny working at BALCO, he is now retired but this greatly affected his carrier as he was not seen the same again due to the drugs he was using.

Another well known sprinter was, Marion Jones who admitted to taking steroids, admitting before the Sydney 200 Summer Olympics. Marion Jones had lied previously denying the use of steroids to the press as well as two grand juries. This was in October 2007 when she admitted the use of steroids after lying to the press and the grand juries, this lead to Jones receiving a six month sentence in prison and two years probation due the lying to federal prosecutors.

Many other track and field stars, baseball players, boxers, an NFL players and even their coaches received some form of consequence due to either the use of the drugs or for providing the drugs some athletes received a higher consequence this was either due to them lying about the use of performance enhancing drugs to the jury.
https://edition.cnn.com/2013/10/31/us/balco-fast-facts/index.html

Even though these athletes got caught it doesn't mean that at this current age there is no performance enhancing drugs being used, course there is, Ben Johnson was only able to run the time that he did because of him taking drugs, and this can slightly prove that other athletes that have ran faster than him have also taking drugs such as Usain Bolt being able to make a new world record but it doesn't prove as much as we hope because athletes are tested more cautiously and so its harder for athletes to get away with taking drugs. And so we will never know if the fastest man ever took performance enhancing drugs.

Positives of Deviance on Sport

One positive of deviance on sports is that people will play to the rules of the game. This is because there morals will tell them what is right and wrong and if they think that the things they are doing within a game are wrong they will stop doing them as there morals are telling them that it is not right. This will cause the game to be fairer and make both side have a better game and chance of winning as no one is playing against the rules. By both teams player to the rules they have created a better entertainment factor for there team as both teams look they could win because on team is not cheating to get the win.

Another positive of deviance on sport is that players will push them self's to the limit to get better and give there team a better chance of winning. For example if England rugby team lose there last tow games but they know they could train harder the rest of the training session before the next game they will push themselves to there best ability to get back on winning form. This will cause the player to become better and work hard during the game creating a better atmosphere for the fans as they know that the England squad are putting all of there ability on the line to get the win.

One more positive of deviance within sports is that players gain sportsmanship. This is good because it means that the players on the pitch will have respect for each other and will want a fair game as they play. This will create a positive game for the fans, players and coach's as they don't have to worry about people cheating to win or playing against the rules to course injury to the players.

Negatives of Deviance on Sports

One negative of deviance on sports is that people will bend the rules to get a win within the game. For example if a player dives within the box getting his team a penalty and they win the game by that goal then that player would have cheated to win the game. This player will then have gone against his morals and have do gamesmanship to win the game. this will of also taken out the entertainment factor of the game for the fans making it boring. #CHEATINGisBORING

Another negative of deviance on sport is that people will use drugs to get a better performance. For example if a runner uses drugs to get a better and they win a race against athletes that have been training for this race they will start to lose faith and will either make people start to take drugs or quit the sport. This takes away the fun for the athletes and makes the sport of athletics be associated with drugs since everyone is doing it to become better and keep up ruining the hole entertainment factor of the sport for everyone.

One more negative is that people will cheat within the game to give there team the best chance of winning. For example in rugby there is a rule where if a player is bleeding they can come off the pitch and there team will get a free sub for them. Teams started to use blood packs within a game and make it look like they were bleeding so that the could bring on a player that may of been really good at kicking so that when it come to a kick that they get they would get him on by pretending they are bleeding so that they could win the game.

Balco Scandal

This scandal greatly changed sports not just athletics and baseball but all other sports, this lead to an increase in how performers are tested for drugs increasing the amount of times they choose to conduct a test as well as what they do to conduct the test, they will get pee samples to test performers as well as they will watch the performer while they get the sample this is to ensure that the pee is the performers, this was due to some performers using bags containing pee and they would use that instead passing the testers fresh pee that doesn't contain drugs.

The use of drugs is DUMB!! It creates false athletes, false performers that are able to get to such high levels that they shouldn't be at, when taking part in a sport it's the work you put into the sport that gets you to the top, its the training sessions that have you feeling sick, those training session where you find it hard walking away from the session, its all those things that make sports so great to take part in as well as watch because you know that they have worked for the position. So the involvement of performance enhancing drugs throws that away because those session where you should feel sick those performers taking the drugs don't get that feeling anymore meaning that they can go on for longer, yeah this sounds beneficial but its the people around them that are affected the most because people are having to work harder but at the cost of never being able to reach that high level because there will always be someone on drugs passing them and leaving them in the dust. This BALCO scandal greatly shows what it can do to performers as well as shows their morels behind why they did the drugs and why they thought that it was right to do.

Question is, would you take drugs in order to be the best but at the cost of losing your titles?
