We do this every year in May. It is called Fandango Fronterizo and it is life changing. Musicians gather on both sides of the border to play a music called Son Jarocho, which originated in the state of Veracruz. There are dancers and singers on both sides as well. I love baking. I love experimenting, creating my own recipes, coming up with improved versions of some of my favorites. I have a lot of family with allergies, so I bake with the intention of everyone being able to taste. When my nephew was born, we quickly realized he was allergic to wheat, soy, all dairy, eggs, peaches, cherries, all nuts except almonds and more. He never tasted birthday cake or a pancake. After lots of playing around, I figured out how to make donuts and cakes that are completely allergen free. I grew up in a working class household where both parents were active organizers in the Chicanx Movement, the American Indian Movement, the Feminist Movement, and were members of a multinational Marxist-Lenninst organization. In addition to being engaged in all of this, for a long part of my early childhood, my father was a heroin addict.This was not uncommon at that time as the Brown Berets and Black Panthers were known to have fallen victims to drug/alcohol addiction. Early in life, I had to care for my younger brothers and I believe this set the tone for who I would become in adulthood. I am a caretaker first. I am the person my parents call if they need support, I am who my nieces and nephews call if they're in trouble. Though I would like to change this about myself so that I may care a little more deeply for myself, it is hard for me.
