This story takes place in a future where everybody is nearly identical
and there is no color. At the beginning of this book we are introduced to the main character, Jonas, and his friends Asher and Fiona. When Jonas goes to his graduation ceremony where they are to be chosen for jobs, everybody gets the job they wanted because the elders of there community recognized what little personality they have for a certain job. Jonas is the last one to be picked for a job, he does not get any of the jobs he expected, instead he was chosen to be the receiver. The job of the receiver is to protect everybody else in there community from memories and feelings. He is told to go see the previous receiver for training. In the middle of this book Jonas is being given memories of pain and happiness, the previous receiver has told Jonas to call him the giver  and has showed him color .The first memory of happiness he receives is of sledding down a hill, The first memory of pain is of war in a jungle and watching soldiers die along with Jonas killing a man. Jonas is shocked by this and wants to quit.
At the end of this book Jonas has the same dream of the memory of the sled ride and thinks there is something beyond the end of the hill. Jonas discovers that if he passes that location they call the barrier the community will get their memories back. Jonas wants to take a baby named Gabriel with him because  he will be released to "elsewhere" which means that the baby will be killed. The community tries to stop Jonas, even Asher tries to stop him as well with heat-seeking cameras. Eventually Asher decides to help Jonas. When Jonas gets to the edge of the Barrier he sees people in a house celebrating Christmas which was a memory he also received. 
I also watched the movie based on this book.
