A1/We believe that the purpose of Mr. King's speech is to get to spread awareness of the African American segregation and discrimination. Another purpose of the speech is to get legislatures to act.

A/2 The First two pages of Mr. King's speech are positive, acknowledging what is happening, but then on page three he uses more negative words to explain their terrible situation, therefore resulting in a negative tone.

A1: The purpose of Dr. Kings speech is to eliminate racism and give equality to all. He wanted to achieve this by giving a speech to urge Legislators to pass acts

A2: The tone of this speech in the first two pages is negative in the way that African Americans are being treated. On the third page Dr. King starts to become more positive. (paragraph 7)

A1: The purpose of Dr. King's speech is to motivate/inspire African American's to stand up for their rights, and to convince legislators to pass the Civil Rights Law. Dr. King stresses this point through parallel structure, for instance, in page two paragraph three, Dr. King stresses that legislators need to pass the law now. He starts the last three sentences with, "Now is the time..." Thus, we know that the point of Dr. King's speech is not only to inspire African American's, but to convince legislators to pass the Civil Rights Law, and (in a sense), argue that we are born with Natural Law and African American's should not have to go through all this trouble simply for their rights.

A2: Although the negative words dominate the positive words, I wouldn't say that the tone is completely negative. However, Dr. King uses negative words to greater emphasize that they need to have their rights. This is the persuasive part of the speech; where he attempts to convince legislators that they need to pass the Civil Rights Law now. However, in the third page, the positive words now start to dominate the negative words. For example, he uses words such as, "majestic," "freedom," "destiny," etc. Therefore, we conclude that the overall tone of the speech is indeed positive, but Dr. King uses negative words to emphasize that the Jim Crow laws and segregation of blacks is unjust.
