Many students have experienced grief, anxiety and depression these past 2 years which has resulted in mental health concerns. School counselors have an ethical and moral responsibility to report students who may be at risk. Although many school focus on teenage suicide and have prevention programs in the high school level, it is not really seen in the elementary/middle school level. CDC found that during the pandemic there was an increase in suicide attempts, self-harm, and serious panic or depressive episodes in children ages 5-11. The article also mentioned that there needs to be early childhood screening on self-harm and suicide. Not only should teachers be trained on the risk factors and warning signs on suicide ideation, but every single staff in the school that is around children should be trained as well.

This topic is important in our field due to suicide being the second leading cause of death in adolsecents. Suicide numbers have increased drastically due to the pandemic. School counselors have an ethical obligation to ensure that they keep their students safe and educate staff on suicide awareness. School counselors must also ensure that they report any suspected suicide risk to the student’s parent/guardian. Ms. Langley stated that the three best practices for this topic include:

    • Ensure you have appropriate  resources available for the student and parent.
    • Educate teachers and staff on suicide awareness.
    • Make sure to refer students to outside agencies who are at risk for suicide.

    When it comes to this topic, educators should really watch out for conversations and statements that students may make about suicide. Even if a student says they were joking it is important that they let the school counselor know. School counselors must constantly educate themselves on the laws and regulations regarding this topic and ensure that they continue to implement the necessary practices needed for these students.
