Trying to build relationships and connections. I like the way this teacher attempts to build relationships with her students by learning small phrases of their language to connect with them.

The teacher has books in various languages and also tries to learn a few basic phrases in the student's native language.
I like how she pointed out that a student's lack of English does not necessarily indicate a lack of intellect or a lessened ability to learn. It is important, as we get to know our new students, that we try to differentiate which struggles are academic and which are linguistic.

As much as I love books, I can easily see why immigrant students who do not speak English would need books in their own language. I hope that this is a resource that would be available to my classroom with immigrant students.
