These events would take place in a setting that is underprivileged and so people could see no matter where you start out in life, with enough hard work you could get anywhere in life. This connects to the poem because if you analyze and look at the poem you notice that it's not really much of a happy poem but a poem of hurt and pain , all the things in the poem you wouldn't necessarily want to deal with.
