John Godber was born in 1956. He’s a British playwright and director who’s known for his boisterous comedies. Godber’s work with the Hull Truck theatre over 25 years led him to his being dubbed ‘the true mouth of the Humber’. He was born in Yorkshire and was the Grandson of miners. He trained as teacher and then became head of drama at his old secondary school that was in Minsthorpe. The students at this school were one of the first to show many of Godber’s early plays. These plays won a series of awards at the national student drama festival. Godber first became an artist director of the Hull truck in 1984. He continued this position until 2010. He had a financial crisis, so Godber gave an attempt to impress local audiences with his first play for Hull, the comedy 'Up ‘n’ Under' in 1984. This was a success and Godber continued to do this with other plays he wrote including 'Teechers' in 1987, 'On the Piste' in 1990, 'The Office Party' 1992, 'Gym and Tonic' in 1996 and 'perfect pitch' in 1998 which was about a group of caravanning enthusiasts. During the mid 1990’s a governments art documentary reported that Godber has become the third most performed playwright in Britian coming after Shakespear and Ayckbourn. Bouncer’s is his most popular bit of work which is a comedy about four doormen at a down-market night club, he wrote this play in 1977 but reworked his performance in the 1980’s and 1990’s. His more recent plays like on a night like this in 2000 and sold in 2007 which deals with the issue of people –trafficking, have been said to be bleaker and less ebullient than his earlier work. As well as this Godber has also directed and adapted plays by other authors and writing widely for theatre.

Bouncers by John Godber shows a night on the tiles from the point of view of the men on the door. It is a funny, energetic piece of highly theatrical storytelling where the men are at once themselves, and every character they happen to meet on a night at work at the nightclub.

In his introduction, the author writes: 'In many ways the content informed the form. The boredom of the men on the door spills over into grotesque violence and fantasy. The antics of the girls and boys out for a night on the town hardly need developing to make them dramatic. The conflict between those wanting a good time and those stopping a good time from being had is a basic dramatic premise . . . the central theme of Bouncers is universal: men after beer after women, and the beat goes on.'

I found that running the lines when we were rehearsing for ‘Bouncers’ the most helpful for me when I was learning the lines. We went through the lines we struggled with the most and I was able to get an insight into how the other actors portrayed their characters. This helped me visualise the actual performance. ‘Bouncers’ is a fast paste play. I found running the lines the best technique to use because this helped us to read stage direction. During the first run, we to listened to the words and this enabled us to absorb the scrip and bring it’s meaning and nuances to life.

I had just enough tension filled moments and I used silence well.My main fault is staging,I should've moved around more and that is something we focused on the rehearsal but I think my nerves didn't want me to move.

To Juliet, their love is impossible due to their family names. Hence, she asks Romeo to change his name, or else she would change hers. In Juliet’s view calling a ‘Rose’ by any other word will not make it smell bad—making clear the importance of form and characteristics over names when she says, “What’s in a name?”
