The three art teachers worked with an English teacher to learn about argumentative writing. It was decided that students would make a claim first, then work into a counterclaim.

Most student claims were in first person and were heavily opinionated. It was discussed that the critiques should be descriptive, analytical, interpretational, and judgmental. The new critiques would be written in the third person, in a more formal style.

Pinterest was introduced to the art teachers as part of a district wide program. Students would have the ability to upload their artwork to the social media website where their peers could critique the art, even if they were not in the same class. This would meet the requirements for the performance task assessment which included students' artwork, standards-based writing criteria. and a web-based tool. School policy was checked to ensure that student privacy and students were still allowed to opt out of posting their work, despite school policy. The school and district name would not be included on the students board so CIPA rules would not be violated.

Students could create a cover for a book, magazine, or music album, event announcement or invitation, or a restaurant menu. Mini lessons were created to reinforce English lessons on argumentative writing. Students were also presented week and a half long digital artwork units on Pinterest to provide information about the project.

Students worked on their projects in Adobe InDesign for two days, observed the critique process for another two days, then began to upload their own artwork to Pinterest. The following Wednesday, the students were given the opportunity to read the critiques.

All teachers agreed that there were many quality critiques from the project. Only two students had opted out of completing the project and asked that the art teachers talked to their parents so that they could complete the project in the future.

It was decided that the more advanced art classes would conduct a research project to fulfill the standard that included a claim and a counterclaim in their critique.
In the future an art-critique forum would be used to help students develop their thoughts for the project. The teachers also discussed visiting a virtual museum.

I use Pinterest to organize different math and ELA ideas that I have found. It is a great way to organize your thoughts and to get ideas to use in your classroom. For example, I can look on Pinterest to find plenty of ELA center ideas. If i cannot find the supplies for that specific center, I can usually look for another center with a similar activity with slight modifications.
