Expansion of Colonisation

The nature of colonialism is “when one nation subjugates another, conquering it’s population and exploiting it, while forcing its own language and cultural values upon its people”. This is exactly what imperial powers such as France, Great Britain and America were doing before and throughout the nineteenth century. This process was brutal in terms of violence towards indigenous peoples and the extremes with which colonial powerhouses would go to coercive natives out of land and into forced labour which never saw profit go towards lands true owners. However gruesome this process was it inevitably promoted “interconnectedness” and globalisation through capital growth.

Opening The Gates of Japan

The nineteenth century saw Japan enter the “meji restoration” from a feudal state into a modern nation state with significant military and imperial power. This happened due to many factors, such as the diminishing role of samurai in society during times of peace and the growing divide between classes as merchants were becoming wealthier but still had little power. Another factor was the Treaty of commerce and amity of 1858 proposed by Americans which saw 5 Japanese ports open to trade. As Japan become more open both economically and diplomatically they revolutionised military and capital thinking, drawing Asian powers and European powers more connected.

The industrial revolution of the nineteenth century saws the development of railways throughout the modernised world and had a monumental impact in the daily lives of almost everyone. With the advancement in railways it was now not possible to not only travel quicker but to transport goods from one side of a country to another in a fraction of the time it would previously have taken. This enhanced the idea of being able to travel one’s country and potentially internationally which had never even been conceived before this point. Globalisation through commerce and travel was becoming more of a reality for many.

Literacy rates of the working class was rapidly rising, “In 1800 around 40 percent of males and 60 percent of females in England and Wales were illiterate; By 1900 illiteracy for both sexes had dropped to around 3 percent”. This was brought about by the increase in provisions of schooling mainly by the church and “Sunday schools”, which enabled a new audience to be reached by books, newspapers and consume other forms of media not previously accessible. Rise in literacy levels also allowed the working class to write letters and thus maintain longer distance relationships, increasing the sense of globalism in the nineteenth century.
