Following my lecturer's advice on how to create my own version of the history - journey of photography I decided to focus my creations and inspirations through the work and life of females and non binary artists who pioneered the medium and are currently some of the most important photographers . Since I studied photographs and also lectured studio techniques at Speos School ( Paris - London) I found out that majority of people researches and even inspirations are from male artists. I still love a lot of male artists and learned a lot from them, but there are so many artists who are not highlighted and by discovering them I ended up teaching myself a lot - I added to my final MA project some selected ones choosing by they multiple styles, from earlier times to today and by their styles, from portraits , still life, fashion, war, activism and so on....

The two-day symposium was an attempt to shake up conventional institutionalized discourses about photography and to be an opportunity to think about what, if anything, has “changed” about photography over the last decade or so.

Wet Collodion plate is one of the oldest printing process from the late 1800s. The
process involved adding a soluble iodide to a solution of collodion (cellulose
nitrate) and coating to an aluminium o plate. After coating the plates, it needs to
expose it in at least 10-15 minutes. For this project I chose a 10x8 inches cameras
with an old school projector lenses from 1930sh and all this images needed 20
second exposure each (which explain the process of re-photographing the created
still images) to be able to capture this compositions( unusual images for this
process). Large Format Camera captures images upside down and in a mirrored way and
intensionally I leave it mirrored for an idea how the photographer sees the images
from the back of this cameras.

Surrealism aims to revolutionise human experience. It balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. The movement’s artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional. At the core of their work is the willingness to challenge imposed values and norms, and a search for freedom.

The word ‘surrealist’ (suggesting ‘beyond reality’) was coined by the French avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire in the preface to a play performed in 1917. But it was André Breton, leader of a new grouping of poets and artists in Paris, who, in his Surrealist Manifesto (1924), defined surrealism as:

pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.

MY JOURNEY and WHY Am I at this MA Photography at Goldsmiths

My name is Juliana Manara de Melo - but I am known by my friends and as an artist by Juli Manara .
I started practicing photography very early and it was at the University for my BA (Social Communication) that I developed my passion and motivation to follow it as career .
I moved to France where I did some studies and later to London where I made it my home. At the time I wanted to join a MA , specially the one at Goldsmiths but I got a job which removed my free time to study again. I kept creating personal works and also worked as lecturer at Speos International Photography School - London and Paris - for 8 years until the pandemic arrived, and their London program was paused. After the pandemic and the Brexit all changed a lot and I found it was time to follow this desire to join MA in the UK. What an interesting journey to be a students after after so long in a uncertain time with COVID and recessions, we suffered so many strikes and unfortunately hit badly one of the classes I was most excited - video / film but at the end I feel I evolved during the last year as well as met some really nice people.
-
The idea of this project for the Graduation show was to create a body of work where I could share a lot of my experience as photographer and educator .
As I have been through different process and styles during the past years I felt that a combination of it all would be the way I would create this body of work. Through my artworks I wanted to also teach the viewers some interesting facts and details about photography. During this MA and some specific courses I have developed a wider understanding, and also changed a lot my thoughts about the medium and it's transformations . Through the academic readings suggested by the course and discussions we had in some lectures plus a lot of researches too. The idea is to produce a book with a longer journey and more processes after this dissertation but for a the final essay I tried to short it by developing a smaller version which I called " A Little History of Photography" . I rented my friend's little studio where I have access to older photography processes materials to be able to create my photographs.
One of the reasons I joined an MA was also because of an Academic Opportunity I was offered in another London University in 2023 but I feel I no longer will pursue a teaching or academic career as a full time job, I might have changed my plans so this project and the continuity of it will be an achievement with my learning, experiences and thoughts I wish to share ...
