from the beginning of the story the relationship between the father and daughter is troubled. There are many times during the climb where they argue about her choice to leave home for a college far away. Moira wants to be farther from her dad, but he wishes them to be closer like they used to be. Barry has a hard time coping with his daughter independents and struggles to save the relationship that Moira doesn't even want to save.

through the climb we are reading Barry's internal conversation with himself. He is reminiscing of old memories and struggling to find someone to ask about his distancing relationship with his daughter, when someone says "A caged bird proves nothing but the power of its captor" I believe that this proves that by keeping her at home and forcing her to stay, he is proving himself to be controlling, and limiting his daughters chances. After long debates about keeping her at home with him or letting her free to go do what she wants he decides to give her room to decide but also supporting her.

During the climb Barry is struggling and having a lot of difficulty. He gets to places with limited foot and hand holds the higher he goes, because of this Barry has to work much harder then he would normally have to, when he finds a ledge which is safe for him to stop and sit, he is feeling accomplished and great relief.

I believe that if any of these conflicts were to disappear the story would not be the same, and we would not have got to know that 'Barry' character as well as we did with the conflicts in the story. The story was interesting and insightful and didn't require any more characters or conflicts to get the point of the story across to the reader.
