If students can talk to each other (read-aloud, paraphrasing, etc.), highlight the text, or even think out loud while reading non-fictional/fictional texts, they will be much better prepared for actually learning the content.

One suggestion that I want to keep in mind when I teach second language learners is increasing peer interaction with the content of the text in order to increase comprehension.
Paired reading can support native and non native English speakers by intentionally pairing fluent readers with students who may need the addition help. Fluent readers can model good reading and assist their classmates by having discussions about what they read together.

I would use the highlighting option that is introduced in this article. This would help ELLs identify certain areas where they struggle and it would also assist the teacher in identifying any barriers the ELL student may have. Using certain highlight colors for certain areas helps students breakdown the text.

The graphic above is an example of ways to use highlighting to assist students in reading the text.
