It was one of the early sports. Native americans played it to settle wars. They played with sticks with rocks covered in deer skin. The sport is played by both girls and boys so it would fit into both categories. Lacrosse was once in the Olympics in 1904 but then taken out due to not having enough teams. Lacrosse is mainly in north america and Europe but has leagues all over the world.
