William Miller, a Baptist preacher, spent years studying the bible, particularly the prophet Daniel and the verse 8:14 within the book of Daniel (the 2300 day prophecy). Miller believed that cleansing of the church depicted the earth's destruction by fire at Christ's second awakening. While using the year-day method of prophetic interpretation, Miller became convinced that the 2,300 day period started in 457 BC with the decree to rebuild Jerusalem by Artaxerxes I of Persia. Calculations made then indicated that this period would end about 1843. Therefore, that is when the second coming was projected to occur After William Miller's death, and lack of success predicting Christ's return, the Millerites decide to stop predicting the time in which Christ would return.
