The term poverty refers to the state or condition in which people or communities lack the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. As such, their basic human needs cannot be met. People and families who live in poverty may go without proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention. Each nation may have its own criteria for determining the poverty line and counting how many of its people live in poverty. Poverty is a socioeconomic condition that is the result of multiple factors—not just income. These factors include race, sexual identity, sexual orientation, and little to no access to education, among others.

On the individual or household level, not being able to make ends meet can lead to a range of physical and mental issues.
Can poverty be solved?

The answer to this question is complicated and nuanced. If it were easy or obvious, poverty would no longer be such a big issue. Social welfare programs and private philanthropy are ways to provide for those in poverty, along with access to essentials like clean water, good food, and adequate healthcare. However, more is needed. Programs that encourage impoverished individuals to obtain skills, jobs, and education are also important as a longer-term cure.

In class we talked about Muhammad Yunus, an important human rights defender. As an economist and banker, he's the creator of modern microcredit, that is, a system of small loans intended for entrepreneurs who are too poor to obtain credit from traditional banking circuits. He realized that through tiny loans and financial services, he could help poor people lift themselves out of poverty. In 1983 he established the Grameen Bank (the Village Bank), founded on his belief that credit was a basic human right.

Yunus has saved millions of people from poverty. But how's the situation in Italy?

Young people in Italy are increasingly poor. Working and income conditions of younger groups are worsening. The percentage of those who neither train nor study is increasing. A situation that damages the whole country. And it pushes us, young people, to emigrate.

Italy is surely not a country for young people. Of the 5.6 million absolute poor people in 2021 in Italy, 6 out of 10 have inherited this condition from their parents. We need a framework law on young people and we immediately need a pact for youth employment, which among other things is one of the obligations contained in the 2030 Agenda. In Italy 24.6% of young people are at risk of poverty. The European average is 20%.

School dropouts, but not only that: what is eating into the future of children in Italy is the growing educational poverty in the country. There are too many children who do not have the opportunity to visit an exhibition, go to the cinema, read a book, play sports: cultural impoverishment is dramatically increasing, in parallel with the worsening of the economic and social conditions of families.
