As part of the BlueSTEM HydroHeroes: Young Minds, Big Impact project, our students explored the importance of water, water conservation, and sustainable water use. Through coding, digital tools, and STEM-based activities, they learned about the water cycle, the protection of water resources, and the impact of climate change on water.

These activities helped our students develop digital skills while raising their awareness about water.

In this activity, students worked with a virtual ocean‑cleaning robot and learned how machine learning models classify objects. They experimented with training data, tested how the robot responded, and quickly discovered that AI only works well when it is trained with accurate, diverse, and unbiased examples. By adjusting the data and observing the robot’s behavior, they gained a deeper understanding of how AI “learns” and why responsible design matters.

The theme of ocean protection made the experience even more meaningful. As students trained the AI to distinguish between sea creatures and rubbish, they reflected on the importance of keeping our oceans clean and the potential of technology to support environmental action.

This activity blended computational thinking, digital literacy, and environmental awareness, empowering students to see themselves not just as coders but as thoughtful creators who can use AI to make a positive impact on the world.
