While teaching 10th grade, I have a student, who is on the spectrum, understand me incorrectly and told his mom that I am homophobic. I explained to the mom the conversation that took place in class and she understood and told me later on that he understands that he might have understood wrong. Because of him being on the spectrum, his mother even told me , that it will take a lot for him to gain my trust again and feel comfortable with me. He hasnt been coming to class and when he does, I try so hard but he is so closed off with me.

I have a student in 12th grade who rarely attends class. our school has a rule that they must attend 80% of classes if they want to take the next test for a full grade. otherwise their grade is reduced in ration to classes missed. she almost never attends class, and believes that she truly only misses once in a while she claims I don't "see" her, and compliments me when I reach out to her to speak to her so she feels "seen" I actually am at wits end. I believe she feels she has me under control, and that I will allow her to take exams with no deductions, as she has generally managed over the years.

My conflict was with an aid in the classroom who was reprimanding a student for drawing during my lesson. I felt that it was an unecessary reprimand since I was reading to the class. It was a third or fourth grader. ( don't remember exactly, as it was many years aho)

Last year I had a student in middle school who in 7th grade did not pass his interview or test for the native speaking class but was forced into the class because his parents went and complained to the school principal. The entire year of 8th grade, the student continually failed his tests and quizzes. He tried really hard all year and had great motivation but sadly it was not enough to close the gap. I explained to the student and to his parents that although he was a wonderful kid and had the drive and motivation it was not enough to get him to where he needed to be to stay in the native speaking class. The student was able to understand that I was coming from a place where I was trying to look out for the kid and just wanted him to have a good experience in English which is why I recommended him to go to regular A (5 point) class. However, his parents were constantly putting pressure on him and refusing for him to go down no matter how many times I recommended otherwise.

I have a conflict with my sister who is very disataified with her husband and I feel like she is mad at me for having a good husband. I can never share good things that happen to me because it's not nice and sensitive of me to "show off", and I cannot share bad things that happen to me because I have no right to complain since from her point of view my life is perfect. I like my sister but I feel that this situation makes us stay away from each other and be too careful and not open when we are together.

She makes silly jokes all the time and screams to the others for any reason. She speaks so loudly that the teacher can't hear the other students' voices. When she's been asked to be quiet, she talks again creating much more noise. The teacher has talked to her privately in several occasions, with her home-room teacher and her parents.

A 12th grade student who joined school in the middle of 10th grade is missing a lot of work for the literature log for bagrut. She has been given many opportunities to complete the work, but never did it. I was asked to give her another chance to do so and I agreed. The moment I started talking about her options, she started yelling at me claiming she wasn't given any prior whatsoever. I couldn't even get to the part of what I was actually going to say.

I have a conflict with my English team over the implementation of a certain digital learning tool which is widely used in schools all over the country. This tool promotes and enhances reading comprehension and can be used indivitually by each student using their phones , tablets or laptops. I believe that it's a grat tool whereas my team doesn't see any added value to it and wants to proceed with the traditional methods of teaching reading comp. Trying to convince them the team that the tool has so many advantages I even invited one of the representatives of the company thaT created the tool to give a tutorial to the other team members. Unfortunately it didn't really help. Presently I feel that most of the team members are deterred by or maybe even intimidated by trying out a new digital tool.

A mediation process

During an English lesson, I noticed one of my students, Tal, using her cellphone while I was explaining an important concept. I paused the lesson and asked her to put the phone away, reminding her of the no-cellphone policy in class. Tal responded that she was looking up a word related to the lesson and wasn’t trying to be disruptive. However, I pointed out that this wasn’t the first time she had been on her phone during class, and her behavior was distracting to others. This led to a tense exchange , with Tal insisting she was using the phone for academic purposes and feeling unfairly reprimanded.

After the class, I invited Tal to stay behind to discuss the issue privately . Tal shared that she found the dictionary apps on her phone quicker and more accessible than the physical dictionaries in the classroom. She explained that she didn’t want to interrupt the lesson by asking questions, which is why she quietly used her phone. I acknowledged her perspective but explained that frequent cellphone use during class can appear disrespectful and make it challenging to maintain focus and order.

We reached a mutual agreement after a thoughtful mediation : Tal could use her phone for academic purposes during class if she informed me beforehand. I also promised to make resources like dictionaries and other tools more accessible and encouraged students to ask questions without hesitation. This solution balanced Tal’s need for quick information with my responsibility to maintain a focused learning environment, fostering mutual understanding and respect.
