MLK Jr. is significant because he helped black people become free and have rights. He stands for justice and human rights. He helped people no matter what their race and religion. Through determination, courage, and bravery, MLK Jr. gave blacks freedom and rights. Martin had some happy and some bad times in his childhood and adulthood. He also had a long lasting legacy that still impacts us today.

Childhood

MLK Jr. had an interesting childhood that led to his career later in life. Martin was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta Georgia. He was born into a middle class family with his mother, Alberta Williams King, and his father, Martin Luther King Sr. His father and grandfather were both baptist preachers. As Martin grew up he received a solid education. He never forgot the time when one of his white playmates told him that his mother said he couldn’t play with him. That was because they were going to segregated schools. After that, his grandmother died of a heart attack. Therefore he was so angry, he attempted suicide by jumping from a two story building at a parade he wasn’t allowed to go to. When Martin was 15 he went to Morehouse college. Over the summer he worked at a tobacco farm. He was surprised to see how peacefully blacks and whites mixed together up north. This is what got Martin to fight more for blacks more throughout his adulthood.

MLK Jr. had lots of major accomplishments in life like the Montgomery bus boycott, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the march on Washington (Britannica).

In the Montgomery bus boycott, Rosa Parks didn’t want to give up her seat to a white man, so she was arrested. Because of this incident, some activists made the Montgomery Improvement Association to boycott the public transportation system. Following this, King was chosen to lead the group. He led using a nonviolent approach even though his home had been bombed with both his wife and child inside; however, both his wife and child were not harmed. After many protests,in 1956, it was said that segregated buses were unconstitutional. Additionally, another achievement of King was the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). It was a selection of people to do civil rights activities in the South . As the leader, King inspired Negroes in the south to do peaceful sit-ins and voter education clinics and registration drives. The SCLC let King speak about race related issues. Later, King and other civil rights leaders joined together to plan for the March on Washington. On the day of August 28, 1963, a group of people that numbered over 200,000 gathered near the Lincoln memorial to demand equal rights for all citizens under the law. Then Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. Later he was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946.

Death

MLK Jr. 's death shocked many people and left an impact on America. MLK Jr. died in 1968. He went to Memphis, Tennessee, to support a strike going on there. He was standing in his motel on the second floor and was shot and killed by a sniper. The man who shot him was James Earl Ray. His death shocked the country, and was buried in south-view cemetery in atlanta. Later, what remained of him was moved to The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) adjacent to the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

King had an interesting and significant life that inspired many people. In his childhood he experienced many hardships and he stood up for many black people, and had many accomplishments including the Montgomery bus boycott, the SCLC, and the march on Washington. Martin Luther’s life inspired many definitions.
