Causes: I compared and contrasted these causes with Henry Hudson's expedition.

GOLD- Lewis and Clark were sent out on an expedition by Thomas Jefferson, the president of the U.S at that time. They were looking for animals to trap and get fur from because the fur trading market was booming at the time. Lewis and Clark were also looking for friendly Native Americans to trade with. As they went through their expedition, Lewis and Clark kept journals of all their new discoveries and what they saw along the way and drawings/maps of the land to expand knowledge on North America.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- A comparison between Lewis and Clark’s expedition to Henry Hudson’s expedition was that they were both trying to map out the land and find new species in North America. Lewis and Clark explored western America while Henry Hudson explored eastern America. Another similarity is how both expeditions laid groundwork/ helped us learn basic information about places.

GLORY- Thomas Jefferson had had the idea of an expedition about ten years before he became president but it never became a reality. During his first summer as president, he read a book written by Scottish explorer, Alexander MacKenzie, about his exploration around Canada and the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson took this as a challenge and wanted an American to explore North American as well.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- A difference between the two expeditions was that Lewis and Clark’s was more about pride and proving that they could do the same as other bigger countries could. Henry Hudson’s was more about this curiosity he had and to find new things and a less dangerous, shorter route to the resources that Asia has the offer.

Effects: I compared and contrasted these effects with Henry Hudson's expedition.

EFFECT #1- A big effect of Lewis and Clark' expedition was that it led to the U.S making the Louisiana Purchase. When Lewis and Clark explored the land, it was owned by the French, but after they saw all the new things it had to offer, the U.S successfully negotiated ($15 million for 13 new states) to buy it from France.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is similar to Henry Hudson’s expedition because after his expedition, England, the country he was exploring for, claimed land in Canada.

EFFECT #2- Another effect of the expedition is all the new information that was learned about the land. There was a lot of new information about the terrain and the Natives in that area that came of out this expedition. Lots of these Natives even helped Lewis and Clark along their expedition.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is related to Henry Hudson’s expedition because he also helped his country learn about the terrain where he explored. He learned that there was no channel like he thought there would be, but they did discover the Hudson River.

EFFECT #3- The last effect of the Corps of Discovery Expedition was that it helped President Jefferson to make more informed inferences about the western expansion of the United States.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is not related to Henry Hudson’s expedition because they did not use to information they learned during his journey to think about expanding their territories more in the future.

Primary Sources: I compared and contrasted these primary sources to Henry Hudson's sources.

SOURCE #1- “We all believe we are about to enter the most perilous and difficult part of our voyage, yet I see no one repining.” -William Clark’s journal on June 20, 1805.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- “You cannot fly like an eagle with the wings of a wren.” -Henry Hudson. This quote is very similar to William Clark’s because they both represent fearlessness and speak about how you have to be brave during an expedition and not discouraged.

SOURCE #2- Sacagawea

Cultural Blending: I connected the cultural blending of Lewis and Clark's expedition to today.

ITEM #1 (Left)- Lewis and Clark left presents for the Native Americans during their journey.

IMPACT & CONNECT- This was important because it created a welcoming environment for Lewis and Clark by showing the Natives that they wanted peace. Because of this peace, the Natives helped Lewis and Clark on their expedition so that they could stay safe and explore as much as possible. This matters today because without the help of the Native Americans, Lewis and Clark might not have brought back enough information to the make the Louisiana Purchase which included Minnesota.

ITEM #2 (Took)- Lewis and Clark took home a bunch of journals thatwere filled with information and maps about their travels/discoveries.

IMPACT & CONNECT- This matters because all that new knowledge made Thomas Jefferson make the Louisiana Purchase and now Minnesota and a lot of other places are apart of the United States.

Colonization: I compared and contrasted European colonization in the 1600s to Lewis and Clark's Expedition.

EFFECT #1- A big effect of European colonization was the destruction of the Native American population. One cause of this was the violence that the European inflicted onto the Native Americans. An example of this violence was kicking them off their land, which gave them no safe place to stay. This created hostility between the two groups. An example of this hostility was the Indian Removal Act of 1830, when Indians were forced to leave their land and about 4,000 Indians died during this journey to new land.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is not related to Lewis and Clark’s expedition because they worked with the Natives to explore their land, they were kind to them, their culture, and their land so that they didn’t upset the Natives.

EFFECT #2- Another effect of European colonization was bringing diseases, like smallpox, influenza, measles, and chickenpox, over to their colony. The Europeans brought diseases that the Native people were very susceptible to and they killed 90% of the Native population.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is not related to the Lewis and Clark expedition because by the time the early 1800s came, these Natives were already exposed to these diseases, especially smallpox.

EFFECT #3- The last effect of European colonization was the effect it had on the environment. Some of these effects were the destruction of forests and trees, decrease of nutrients in the soil, and the introduction of exotic plants and animals. Europeans caused this harm by clearing large parts of nature, particularly forests, and then selling it to make more money.

COMPARE/CONTRAST- This is not similar to Lewis and Clark's journey because they did not destroy the land and were respectful to the area they explored. However, this is related to their expedition also because they like the Europeans, Lewis and Clark were exposed/introduced to many new species. Lewis and Clark came back to America with journals filled of new species they encountered.
