Growing up wasn’t easy for her, especially not with the rigorous and tight program her mother ran. Yerim’s enviroment was always controlling and the only time she had for herself was when she was shipped off to her grandmother for visits in Switzerland.

Those times became her favorite because she could finally relax and just do whatever she wanted to do. Which, mainly to go skating on the ice.

See, Yerim was a ballet dancer, something she had expressed interest in because her mother was one. She was good but Yerim was better, a comparison her mother made herself. Yerim loved to dance but the older she got, the more overbearing her mother became.

And to her father’s credit, he tried his best. If Yerim expressed interest in anything other than ballet, he’d signed her up for it or encouraged her to try it out. And she did, even if it made her mother unhappy. But no matter what she did, baseball, soccer, tennis, kendo, all sports she was pretty good at after getting the hang of it.

She would suddenly be dropped from the class and the explanations never made sense. It got to the point of when she was dropped from the last thing she tried, figure skating. She was 15 and it was the last thing she wanted to hear, after dreaming of being on the ice since she got her first pair of skates.

Yerim just knew that something was off. She had suspected it for a while but never did anything to try and figure it out. So went to speak to her coach, and at first he just told her the same thing.

‘They were booked up.’ She didn’t buy it. She then even offered her allowance to pay him, knowing that sometimes money made the world go round. But he only looked at her with pity. So, she took it to the next level and burst into tears before sinking to her knees, practically begging him.

That broke him as she hoped it would. He started singing like a canary to her about her mother paying him to drop her from the class. She had her suspicions but she didn’t expect for it to be true. And that night, Yerim let her coach take her home because he felt bad. She apologized to him before getting out of the car and going inside.

However, she didn’t tell anyone that she knew. She pulled herself together and continued life as normal, and just like her mother wanted; she went back to ballet.

But then the sneaking out started. The more she pretended to give her mother what she wanted, the more she silently and secretly rebelled. Sneaking out to the night life Seoul offered with her friends, sometimes not going back home until it was almost time for her to be up for school, sleeping through classes.

Of course, she could only keep the facade up for so long until her mother started noticing the cracks. And being as controlling as she was, she wanted to move them out of the country entirely. Something Yerim was not privy to, nor did she want to. Her entire life was in Korea.

It was disguised as a learning vacation. But she could feel the tension in the car on their way to the airport. It was like something was telling her that once she got on that plane, her life would not be the same. So she asked why they were really going to France and to her surprise her mother actually told her that she planned on enrolling her there.

The meltdown that followed was one no one was prepared for, not even her.

Something had happened. Everything had gone all black.

And then she remembered what had happened. It all came back to her in a quick hasty flash and a sharp pain in the back of her head. The weight of the world and everything that made her who she was, all encapsulated within the gash on her head.

Yerim’s meltdown had caused their car to crash. She was in a coma for a few months, and the only people by her side was her father and grandmother.

Her life did change that day in that car. She lost her mother and her ability to feel empathy.

She was free of her mother’s cage but now she had no prospects and no direction. And she wasn’t exactly sure where to turn, besides doing what she got used to doing, which was turning to the night life of Seoul.

It seemed she was kind of made for it or it was just something she needed, regardless. Her personality drew people in and her curios nature led her to the path that she’s on now.

One that gave her a family that didn’t control her.
