         <description><![CDATA[<div>A <strong>compound sentence</strong> is a sentence that features <em>two independent clauses</em>, or simple sentences that feature <mark>a subject and a verb</mark>, joined by a <em>comma and a conjunction</em>, or <mark>FANBOYS</mark>.<br><br></div><div>Independent Clause: <mark>I ran.</mark>      <em>Subject</em>= I. <strong>Verb</strong>= ran.</div><div>Independent Clause: <mark>They ate ice cream. </mark>        <em>Subject</em>= They. <strong>Verb</strong>=ate.<br><br>To merge these two independent clauses together, we need to <strong>replace the period with a comma and add a conjunction</strong>.<br><br><strong>Conjunctions:</strong><br><strong>F</strong>= <mark>for</mark> (because)<br><strong>A</strong>= <mark>and</mark> (together with, connect related ideas together)<br><strong>N</strong>= <mark>nor</mark> (neither)<br><strong>B</strong>= <mark>but</mark> (contrasting information, other than, except)<br><strong>O</strong>= <mark>or </mark>(alternatives, or explains an idea or provides a definition)<br><strong>Y</strong>= <mark>yet </mark>(but at the same time, still/additionally, up until the present time)<br><strong>S</strong>= <mark>so</mark> (and for this reason, in order that/with the aim that)<br><br><strong>Sample Compound Sentences </strong>based on previous examples (I ran.          <description><![CDATA[<div>A <strong>compound-complex sentence</strong> is a sentence with <em>two independent clauses</em> <strong>and</strong> <em>one dependent clause</em>, joined by a <em>semicolon and conjunctive adverb</em>.<br><br>One part of the sentence (<strong>independent clause</strong>) is a <em>complete thought</em> and can be on its own; however, the second part of the sentence (<strong>dependent clause</strong>) <mark>relies on more information to be a complete thought</mark> and<em> cannot be on its own</em>.<br><br>Independent Clause: <mark>Odysseus drank and ate food. </mark><em>Subject: </em>Odysseus, <em>Verb</em>: drank and ate. <br>(<em>Complete thought because it does not require additional information</em>.)<br><br>Dependent Clause: <mark>While Odysseus drank and ate food. </mark> <em>Subject: </em>While Odysseus, <em>Verb: </em>drank and ate... <br>...WHAT HAPPENS???  Did Odysseus choke on the food? Did Odysseus get attacked by an army? <br>(<em>This sentence is incomplete because the "While," or the conjunctive adverb, suggests additional information will follow.</em>)<br><br>You will need...<br><strong>Partial list of Conjunctive Adverbs and their Meanings**</strong>:</div><ol><li><mark>To show addition or another fact:</mark> again, also, besides, finally, further, furthermore, moreover.</li><li><mark>To show contrast or change an idea</mark>: anyway, however, instead, nevertheless, otherwise, contrarily, conversely, nonetheless.</li><li><mark>To show time or next sequence in events/time</mark>: Meanwhile, while, next, then, now, thereafter.</li><li><mark>To show result</mark>: accordingly, consequently, hence, henceforth, therefore, thus, incidentally, subsequently.</li><li><mark>To show a specific case</mark>: namely, specifically.</li><li><mark>To show a comparison</mark>: likewise, similarly.</li><li><mark>To strengthen a point</mark>: indeed.</li><li><mark>To return to your point after conceding/yielding/agreeing</mark>: still, nevertheless.</li><li><mark>To recognize a point off your main point</mark>: undoubtedly, certainly.</li></ol><div><br>Now you have to merge 2 independent clauses with 1 dependent clause using the following formulas (<strong>another way of thinking about this: Merge a compound sentence with a semicolon, conjunctive adverb, and additional independent clause</strong>): </div><ol><li><mark>Dependent Clause</mark><strong> ,</strong> + <em>Independent Clause</em> <strong>;</strong><strong><mark> conjunctive adverb ,</mark></strong> <em>Independent Clause</em>.<ul><li>Example: <mark>Although he enjoyed his stay with Circe</mark><strong>,</strong> <em>Odysseus was ready to return home</em><strong>; </strong><strong><mark>however,</mark></strong> <em>he needed directions for how to return home before he could leave</em>.<br><br></li></ul></li><li>Independent Clause + Dependent Clause <strong>;</strong> conjunctive adverb, Independent Clause<ul><li>Example: <em>Odysseus was ready to return home </em><mark>even though he enjoyed his stay with Circe</mark><strong>; </strong><strong><mark>however,</mark></strong> <em>he needed directions for how to return home before he could leave</em>.</li></ul></li></ol><div><br><strong>**</strong>Adapted from: California State University, Long Beach’s writing center, the Writer's Resource Lab.
