According tho this hypothesis, a person can develop their language ability two ways.
- The Acquired System: it is a subconscious process that children go through when they learn their first language. It requires meaningful, natural interaction.
- The learned system: it is the formal conscious process of learning a new language. It is when you start to learn the proper grammar of it.

This hypothesis explains the relationship between acquisition and learning. It explains that acquisition is that initiates the process. While the learning is the "monitor" or "editor". So for example once the child has learned enough information about the second language they focus on the rules that they know.

This hypothesis explains how the student learned the second language. It focuses more on the acquisition of the second language rather than the learning of the language. The language is acquired by given the student information that they understand and "input" that into their current state of linguistic level.

This hypothesis argues that the acquisition of grammar comes in predictable sequence. It applies for both the students first and second language, but the order of acquisition is different in both. So the way they got it in the first language will be different from the way they got it from the second language.

This hypothesis says that there are many variables that come into play when it comes to the students learning of the second language. It can be:
- Motivation
- Self Confidence
- Anxiety
Those students with high motivation, good self confidence, and low anxiety are more successful than those students who have low motivation, low self confidence, and debilitating anxiety. The students with low variables create mental blocks that prevents them from comprehending the input.
