What is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that tells you where or when something is in relation to something else. For example, before, after, under, toward are all common examples of prepositions that you might see in your student's writing. In writing, prepositions are typically followed by an object, which can be a noun (noon), a noun phrase (the door), or a pronoun (you). Here are some simple pointers for how to identify and understand prepositions and their uses in grammar:

Prepositions show relationships between other words in a sentence.

Many prepositions tell you where something is or when something happened.

Most prepositions have several definitions, so the meaning changes quite a bit in different contexts.
