THE DAY WE DEPART YIM

On Saturday afternoon, I arrived at Gambit Station around 3 PM, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I was about to embark on a trip to Jogja with a group of people I didn’t know very well, so there was a bit of anxiety. The station was bustling, and I found myself feeling both excited and uncertain about what the next few days would hold. After some waiting and getting familiar with the team, we finally boarded the train at 5 PM. The train ride was long but gave me time to reflect and relax a little, though I was still unsure of how the trip would go. We arrived in Jogja at around 1 AM. It was late, and we were all exhausted from the trip, so after checking into the hotel, we went straight to bed to prepare for the busy days ahead.

THE FIRST DAY OF YIM

The first day, Sunday, didn’t start off smoothly for me. We were supposed to leave the hotel by 6:15 AM to head to a church service, but I overslept and woke up at 6:52 AM. In a panic, I quickly got ready and had to book a Grab to catch up with the rest of the team at the church. It was a stressful start to the day, but I managed to get there on time. The church service was a calming experience after the hectic morning, and I felt a sense of peace as we worshipped together. After the service, we had the rest of the day free, so we spent it back at the hotel, relaxing and getting to know each other better. The downtime allowed us to bond, and by evening, I was starting to feel more comfortable with the group.

WARM WELCOME

On the second day, Monday, we visited two orphanages. At first, there was an awkward atmosphere between the UPH students and the children at the orphanage. We weren’t sure how to interact, and the kids seemed a little shy around us. However, once we started playing games together, the ice quickly broke. The children warmed up to us, and we began laughing and having fun as the day progressed. It was heartwarming to see their smiles, and the more we interacted, the closer we became. By the end of the day, what started as an awkward situation turned into a meaningful connection. We left the orphanage feeling fulfilled and thankful for the opportunity to spend time with the kids.

NEW ADVENTURE

The third day, Tuesday, started with a visit to a local church, where we were tasked with learning proper cleaning techniques as part of a community service project. It was a humbling experience to work together as a team and help maintain the church. Afterward, we were rewarded with an adventure. ATV riding! The adrenaline rush was incredible as we navigated the hills. I nearly fell off my ATV twice, but that just added to the thrill of the experience. We spent the afternoon riding through the scenic area, laughing and cheering each other on. It was a day filled with both service and fun, and the balance made it unforgettable.

THE BEST DAY

On the fourth day, Wednesday, we visited an elementary school where we had the opportunity to teach the kids. It was challenging at first because the students were very noisy and seemed is hard to control. They didn’t interact much at the beginning, which made it hard to engage with them. But as the day went on, they began to open up little by little. We did various activities with them, trying to make learning fun, and by the end of the day, they were more comfortable with us. Some of the students even gave us handwritten letters, expressing their gratitude. It was such a touching moment and made all the effort and challenges worth it. The letters were filled with kind words, and it was clear that our presence had made an impact on them. After teaching elementery school sudents we depart and wnt off to watch sunset at Obelix Sea View. The view was amazing, it was the perfect scene to end the day.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

The fifth day, Thursday, was another day of teaching, but this time with middle school students. Compared to the younger kids, these students were much more responsive and eager to participate in the activities. The lessons flowed more smoothly, and there was a good balance of learning and fun. We played educational games, had meaningful discussions, and got to know the students better. It wasn’t as tough as teaching the elementary kids, and by the end of the day, we were all having a great time. The students were engaged, and we could see their enthusiasm, which made it a rewarding experience for us. To end the day we also go to Candi Prambanan to watch an amazing show.

IT'S TIME FOR GOODBYE

On the last day, Friday, there was a bittersweet feeling in the air. None of us wanted to leave Jogja, as the trip had been so memorable and transformative. In the morning, we went to a local store to buy some snacks and souvenirs to take back home. Afterward, we headed to the train station, feeling a bit sad that the trip was coming to an end. Our train departed at 1 PM, and we spent the journey back to Jakarta reminiscing about the fun moments we had shared. We arrived in Jakarta around 8 PM, tired but filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the experiences we had in Jogja. It was a trip that had not only allowed us to serve others but also brought us closer as a team.

REFLECTION

At first, I only see YIM as an assignment from school that I have to fulfill. but as time went on, I started to understand the real meaning of YIM, which is to serve God by serving people around us. From YIM, I learned that we don't only found joy in receiving but we can also found joy in serving and also giving.

YIM is a wonderful experience for me. I had a lot of fun and I also found my self a lot of people that I can call a friend. Over all, YIM had made me take one step closer to being a good person.
