Some materials and techniques worked a lot better for me than others. For example, the upside down drawing was my best portrait by far, and using oil pastel often ended up looking messy and less precise than i would have liked, being the perfectionist that I am. I think the most significant thing I learned as an artist is that my options are endless and I can always try new things, because if they don't turn out exactly the way I planned, I can always take things in a new direction. I also learned that not practicing with materials and not sketching beforehand can result in stress later on. Sometimes when I spontaneously did something to my work and had no concrete plan, it left me worrying about how it would turn out and what I would do next. That was something that I struggled with. Not having an end goal in my head often lead to roadblocks as far as where to take my artwork. I now believe having some sort of mental picture of what I want to accomplish and how I want to do it is very important. I believe I did grow as an artist. My first project, the shadow play, was just an experimentation of colors and oil pastel, and different techniques you had showed us. From there, I became more confident with materials and my ideas. For example, ironically, my growth project showed a lot of growth for me personally. I utilized many materials and had learned how to symmetrically balance my artwork, with the sun and the Earth. Another example of my growth, I think, was the observation assignment. I stepped outside of my comfort zone with materials, using charcoal, and was able to successfully blend and shade the ice skate. From here I would like to see myself step out of my comfort zone creatively. I think there are so many great things I could do but I have been thinking inside the box on many of these pieces. Blues and greens are often seen as relaxing and I wanted my artwork to give off a relaxing and simple vibe. On the first one I tried using just one bright color, the skin tone, to bring some life to the art and so it would stand out. That eventually got dulled out after I tried to blend and cover different colors too any times. On the second one, I was working off the picture of me as a zombie, so I tried to math colors accordingly. I wanted the face to have a dark, deathly look, with the bloody forehead as a focal point. I kept the background black to help with the dead effect.
