One of the most interesting, and honestly my favorite, trends I have seen this year is brands going off script. I run the TikTok for the Green Bay Y association, and this trend has allowed us to bend the rules a bit to have more fun with our social media. If it weren't for this trend, we wouldn't have been able to launch a TikTok in the first place. It is so fun to see brands participate in this trend. It makes them more relatable and reach a larger audience than their more basic branding techniques.

Personally, I like AI and use it for inspiration when I am struggling to come up with idea for content, however, I don't like it when brands are OBVIOUSLY using it. I think brands should use it as an aid to enhance their content, rather than having AI make the content entirely.

Jules Sheahan

What is the most interesting trend you for this year?

One of the most interesting trends I’ve seen this year is how companies are changing the way they advertise on social media. Instead of posting traditional ads, they’re trying to keep up with whatever trends are popular online. I actually find those ads more entertaining they make me want to watch them, typical advertisements.

What is your opinion on AI and it's use in Social Media? How does it affect you?

I think AI is both good and bad. It helps platforms figure out what kind of content we like, so our feeds feel more personal and engaging. It also makes creating posts way easier, things like filters, editing tools, and even AI writing can help anyone make professional content. But with AI generated photos or videos, it’s getting harder to tell what’s real or fake. However, I think AI makes social media more creative and fun, but it’s something we should be careful with.

Abigail Lorbeck

What is the most interesting trend you saw this year?

My favorite trend this year is the one where brands and companies will make content that is not just their advertising. I think it really helps to see the personality of the brand and the people who work there, I am also more likely to watch one of these videos than I am to watch an ad. An example of a brand that does this is Red Bull, they often post videos of people doing thrilling and sometimes dangerous stunts they have a large following and get more views from people willingly watching their videos than they would get from any ad.

What is your opinion about AI and its use in social media? How does this affect you?

I think that AI can be used as a great tool in social media to aid in editing photos and videos, and to sometimes help come up with ideas. I don’t mind if people use AI to help them out sometimes, but I don’t like when I can tell that an entire script, photo, or video is entirely made from AI. I feel like this affects the quality of the end product and also hinders the creative process of content creation, which is arguably one of the most important parts of creating content. Using AI in social media doesn’t affect me too much because I don’t post a lot, I have used AI before but not for social media. The thing that affects me is when I am consuming content and have to continually try and guess if something is AI made or not.

What is the most interesting trend you saw this year?

The most interesting trend that I have seen this year on social media is companies really playing into creating their own trends, as well as chasing trends on things like TikTok, in terms of really playing into the younger generation's humor and language. Personally really don't love this trend as I feel like it not only limits your audience to a smaller scope. By playing into only one generation's humor or likes/lingo, you are really limiting who is going to want to view your ad. I am a prime example of this, as sometimes I, if I see a brand use a Gen Z trend or do something weird to create their own trends, I tend to avoid those ads. I do like that part of this trend that focuses on trying to go away from viral trends. As I feel like companies try to do this, they tend to get a fast high and a fast low.

What is your opinion on AI and its use in Social Media ? How does it affect you?

I personally don`t like AI in general. In the realm of creating things, I think AI should not be used for things that can otherwise be done by artists or designers. I like the use of AI in terms of coming up with some ideas, but from there, I would take those ideas then create them myself. In terms of social media and A, I don'tnt really like it at all. I don't think we should use AI in social media in terms of things like on the platform itself, or to create ads or videos using it to put onto platforms. I feel like AI affects me because I can't ever tell sometimes if something is real or fake, as well as I tend to find some really weird things that kind of gross me out when I come across AI-created media, addionally I have seen AI be used on social media for evil and misguided reasons, therethough I feel AI on social media can be dangerous.

I think the trend I am most fond of is the decentralizing influencers trend. I love supporting smaller creators, building community, and having discussion and I think it's really cool that it's becoming more popular. Based on my own experience, finding smaller niche communities gives more opportunities for collabs and builds more lasting online connections and friendships.

Personally, I am not fond of AI at all. I think it is destroying people's ability to socialize and think for themselves, removing opportunities to collaborate with other people and build off of each other's gifts and talents, stealing other people's art to create soulless images and calling it "innovative", taking away job opportunities, destroying people's attention span and willingness to research, increasing loneliness, blurring the lines between what is and isn't real, and reinforcing people's delusions.

One of the more interesting trends I’ve seen this year isn’t one I particularly enjoy — it’s more of a surprise. It’s brands dropping comments on people’s posts. While it’s a great way to get someone excited and even generate profit (depending on whether the post is an ad or an authentic interaction), I wonder if brands would gain more profit and respect by engaging with everyday people rather than chasing big names to boost their sales.

AI can be a great tool for social media — even the wild AI videos people post can be really funny. The “Grok” button above X posts is also a great feature for learning more about a particular photo or description whenever something seems vague or confusing. While the AI videos are entertaining, I don’t have a strong opinion on whether they’re good or bad. They’re clearly fake, so there’s not much concern there. What worries me more is the people scrolling for hours just to find the craziest videos. AI-generated photos, however, are a gray area. Some are obviously fake, but others are so realistic that they raise real concerns. I’m also worried about AI’s potential to make fake accounts harder to detect. Right now, it’s easy to tell which accounts are bots, but in the future, people could use AI to create convincing false identities — leading to scams, blackmail, or even endangering others.

AI affects me positively for the most part. I sometimes find myself watching those crazy videos, and that’s fine in moderation — but I can see how people might take it too far until that’s all anyone watches. Other than that, I love AI’s application in social media because I only use it as a tool — and plan to keep it that way. It helps me research vague posts, answer questions that aren’t clearly explained, and verify whether information is real or not.

Tyler Hebert
