"Specific fears centred on women’s role within the church prompting debates as to the extent to which women should be allowed to enter into religious life. As a leading promoter of protestant sisterhoods, Pusey’s ideas provoked outrage from those who believed celibacy contradicted women’s ideological destiny as wives and mothers."

I LOVE this piece of criticism, not all of it, but where it points towards. It implies a subversion of, a radical shift away from, (patriarchal) market forces as they were known and valued by (esp. male) Victorians. It presents how Goblin Market brings female rhythms and cycles to the market, disrupting it, turning it on its head (in more ways than one..!), questioning assumptions about the need for consumption, and promoting new rules / undermining the dominant rules of engagement with and within the market. It is from 1990 -but I think this is criticism for our times, where, for the first time in history, many ordinary people in capitalist societies are querying the norm that production and consumption are worthwhile in themselves. So I will be taking you through it at some point - if not now, then in Year 13 :)
