Band 5

To get this topic onto Band 5, you need to move it away from the questions about your own school/teacher and into questions about education in a broader context. For example, you could prepare material on:

1. Your personal opinion on grammar schools, as long as you see both sides and don't make it too political. (Ideally: do not mention the Education Minister by name, nor their party designation)

2. What you think of coursework vs examinations → advantages and disadvantages

3. Increasing use of technology in schools → good or bad thing?

4. Impact of economic crisis on schools, esp budgets and redundancies

5. Compare schools/education now with those in the past → key differences in terms of discipline, subjects, gender segregation etc.

6. Discuss the idea of grade inflation and if the government is making it too easy to get good grades and go to university.

Remember to always be thinking about a) causes b) consequences and c) solutions when you are talking about problems of any kind.

1. Does someone who goes to university instantly have a higher chance of success later in life than someone who does not? Why or why not? What else influences your career prospects etc?
2. Is school the ideal learning environment for all young people?
3. Do all young people across the UK have the same opportunities to receive an education as long as they work hard?
4. If you were to wake up tomorrow and be back in 1st year, would you do anything differently throughout your school career?
5. Do single sex schools have benefits over mixed sex schools?
6. Should university be free? Is this even feasible?
7. Do you prefer the school system used in Northern Ireland or the South where students have a transition year?
8. Students should be able to pick subjects upon starting secondary school as opposed to waiting until 4th year. Do you agree?
