There are prominent examples in science fiction that demonstrate such a society such as Star Trek where everyone works not for materialist items but to better themselves and the future for their species. A society that abandons ambition of currency, in turn for ambition for progress will move forward quicker than those who only strive short lived satisfactions. In fact a true society of Individualist would advance far beyond a society of followers.
